From computer game to assistive technology.

From the world of computer games to becoming assistive technology in healthcare. How did this come about?

jDome’s creator, John Nilsson, is the entrepreneur and keen PC gamer who sought an ever stronger game immersion experience. He asked himself; what would happen if I had a screen that increased the visual experience of the game – a panoramic view? Wouldn’t it be more realistic and fun then? No sooner said than done. John started to develop his ideal gaming screen. He set it up like a projector screen in front of his home cinema projector, stood up and started to play. It certainly crossed his mind that this could well be a secret weapon against a more sedentary lifestyle, but he never imagined that jDome’s present target group would be the one to help the product make its breakthrough.

Inventions choose their own paths sometimes. Such was it for jDome. John came into contact with the Centre for Health Technology in Halland and the Physiotherapy Department of the Metropolitan University College in Copenhagen, as well as healthcare personnel at dementia care homes and everything took off. Cooperation led to jDome being developed into an optimal piece of equipment for patients suffering from dementia and strokes, who need effective training and rehabilitation to counteract disabilities. The solution adopted worked as well for dementia care as for somatic care and fitness activities. It didn’t take long before jDome’s activation assistive technology had been introduced into several care environments around the country. The next big step was taken in September 2015 when Brighter acquired the company behind jDome as part of its plan to increase its range of products with several solutions that contribute to improving the quality of treatment and daily life for patients.

jDome is a fantastic tool with great development potential, not least in combination with new services and products, and we see many new potential markets and areas of use to explore.
